Male homosexual behaviour was widely found throughout China’s long history, and in some areas lesbianism was very prevalent.

Quite a large number of homosexuals appear throughout Chinese history both in the imperial palace and in society at large. In ordinary society, there were pimps who provided sexual services to males, homosexual organisations called “brotherhoods” and lesbian organisations called “mirror polishers”   In ancient China homosexuals were not discriminated against or abused. There were no parallels for the torture or burning of homosexuals in medieval Europe.
