Bride’s Scrolls (also known as Dowry Scrolls)
In old China there was a kind of dowry scroll which comprised eight, twelve or sixteen pictures displaying different positions of sexual intercourse.
The erotic pictures depict details of various sexual intercourse positions which would be educational to the “bride to be”. At various times in China history, sex was a taboo subject and not openly discussed in the confines of rich and educated families. Supposedly, the “bride to be” would have no idea of what to expect on her wedding night. Therefore the families would engage the services of an artist who would produce erotic pictures on a scroll that were very descriptive and would indicate and show in detail what the female was to experience on her wedding night.
The richer the family the more elaborate and detailed the bride’s scroll.
The newlyweds took out the scroll and spread it on the bed on their wedding night, and then made love in imitation of the positions in the paintings.
Note the presence of a second female in some pictures - this was the bride’s servant, who would be there to assist her mistress in all matters and help her on her wedding night.
